The beach clean was well attended (by 40 volunteers) and highly professionally organised by the Marine Conservation Society in collaboration with a sponsor – Davidoff Cool Water. What might have been thought to be a drinks company instead turned out to be associated with cosmetics and all those attending came away with both a flashy ‘Save the Ocean’ T-shirt and a bottle of eau de toilette as a bonus for their hard work.
At first sight, on a warm, sunny morning at the peak of the holiday season, the 100m of beach between the lifeguard station and Sedgewell slipway looked devoid of rubbish but after an hours diligent searching and some minor disturbance to the many sunbathers, the volunteers managed to collect and classify 860 items, amounting to 13.5kg of assorted junk. The organisers were well pleased and the volunteers all departed with a glow of satisfaction in a haze of Cool Water perfume, secure in the knowledge that they had improved the appearance of our beach for all its users and, arguably more important, they had reduced the pollution of our local sea and the threat to wildlife by a small amount.
The next beach clean will be on Cockleridge, 3-4pm on Sunday 18th September, organised by the Aune Conservation Association in collaboration with the Marine Conservation Society. All will be welcome but please don’t expect any handouts of perfume! Check this website for details in due course.
