This picture of the beacon (courtesy of Janie Grace) somehow summarises the fantastic celebratory atmosphere at Bigbury’s Platinum Jubilee party on 2nd June at the Memorial Hall. By dint of strong teamwork and a ‘can-do’ spirit from the primary organisers and many willing helpers, over 400 people were able to park sensibly and come together on a fine but rather chilly evening to enjoy an extremely popular hog roast, down a few oysters with a slug of gin, join in some good old fashioned party games and have a hearty sing-song whilst sharing the Jubilee Cake entries: all this to the accompaniment of a musical background provided by some of our own talented performers.
Perhaps most importantly, everybody was able to chat to their friends and neighbours in a way that they hadn’t for over two years during a giant outdoor community picnic. The sense of fun was enhanced by a free raffle with prizes donated by several local businesses and individuals, and by the ‘royal’ attire sported by those brave enough to join in the fancy dress parade in some highly fashionable topical outfits! The evening was rounded off with the National Anthem, in tribute to our Queen and her 70 years service, some spectacular fireworks and the aforementioned beacon.
On behalf of Bigbury Parish Council, heartfelt thanks go to everybody involved!
