At its meeting on 11th January, Bigbury Parish Council unanimously decided to hold the precept at last year’s level of £7600/annum for the financial year 2012/13.
A cutback of as much as 20% in the precept was considered because the Council has substantial reserves; although, in reality, such a cutback would only have resulted in a council tax reduction of several pounds per household. However, an argument was presented that, in the current economic environment, there are certain to be unprecedented unknown increases in local costs arising from cutbacks being made by both DCC and SHDC. In the view of Councillors, the parish needs to be in a position to absorb these costs to maintain services and facilities whilst also supporting worthy local initiatives.
