SAVE THE PICKWICK INN
The Pickwick Inn at StAnn’s Chapel has been closed since February 2022. Instead of standing as an important, gateway landmark to the parish, the pub is fast becoming a blot on the landscape rather than the important community asset that it once was. Whilst there has been some interest from several parties in rescuing the pub, the owners of the property have been less than forthcoming in their replies to any offers. Bigbury Parish Council now is considering applying to SHDC for an Asset of Community Value designation for this last remaining, easily accessible pub in our parish.
Anybody who wishes to help save the Pickwick as a pub rather than allowing its possible change of use to a housing development should send a brief email to: cllrswatts.bigburypc@gmail.com to include their name, contact details and the simple statement that ‘I would support retaining The Pickwick Inn as a public house and important community asset’
This item will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting, starting at 7.30pm on 12 October in the Memorial Hall, StAnn’s Chapel.

COVID SUPPORT GRANTS AVAILABLE IN DEVON
Grants of up to £25,000 available to increase Covid-19 support for people in Devon this winter
Devon Communities Together is working in partnership with other voluntary sector and community organisations in Devon to deliver the Devon County Council Covid Outbreak Management fund.
We are accepting applications for large grants between £10,000 and £25,000 to increase the support for people over the coming winter months in response to the covid pandemic.
Applications are encouraged from voluntary and community sector organisations and community groups that are working in a whole range of areas including:
communicating important messages with their communities around Covid-19 issues;
targeted interventions for communities or workplaces; building local capacity to respond to outbreaks;
extending specialist support that’s already in place; community-based support for those who are disproportionately affected, including BAME people in Devon;
research and analysis to learn from and shape, regional and local initiatives;
providing support for those who are clinically vulnerable;
and supporting rough sleepers.
Smaller grants of up to £300 are being administered by Devon Voluntary Action (DeVA) and Living Options Devon is administering an Equality and Diversity Fund, with grants from between £5,000 – £20,000.
There are lots of factors at play this winter that may exacerbate the already challenging effects of Covid-19 here in Devon. We want to ensure that community groups and organisations who are doing fantastic work ‘on the ground’ are able to deliver increased support to people in their communities who need it. So, if you’re engaged in activities that support people due to the effects of Covid-19, then please do visit our website, check your eligibility and apply as soon as possible.
Applications for the large grant fund may be made online at: www.devoncommunities.org.uk/covid-outbreak-management-fund.
For more information on small grants up to £300 visit www.devonva.org/news/304.
To check eligibility and to apply for the Equality and Diversity Fund, contact Info@livingoptions.org.
Applications to the Large Grant Fund are reviewed and grants awarded on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as they are able. All Grants will need to be spent by the end of March 2022.

A BIG THANK YOU TO BIGBURY’S COVID VOLUNTEERS
This is a note of thanks to all those people who responded, many months ago, to the request to help our community weather the COVID pandemic by forming the Bigbury Coronavirus Support Group (BCSG). At that time, none of us had any idea how we would be affected and, thankfully, no idea how long we’d have to endure! According to Devon CC – as or 21st May 2021 – ‘positive cases of coronavirus remain stable in Devon, with the county’s rates of eight cases per 100,000 population being well below England’s average of 21 positive cases per 100,000. Isolated outbreaks are still occurring in some settings, but with little evidence of the virus transmitting within those local communities. Rates are currently highest in the South Hams area. Although positive cases range across broad age groups in Devon, case rates are currently highest among our youngest population, 0 to 19 year olds.’ Most of the vulnerable groups in the population have now received both inoculations and should be well protected. At last it seems that the pandemic may be drawing to a close with more normal life cautiously resuming.
I have just completed a COVID response survey from ‘ Devon Communities Together’ on behalf of the BCSG and was reminded that I should bring you up to date with developments. The BCSG of around 50 volunteers was recruited via Bigbury News and assorted responsibilities (driving, shopping, telephone support, etc.) were agreed with each of you, although many will not have been called upon in practice. Much of the initial burden of ordering and delivering essential goods was quickly relieved by the excellent work of the Holywell Stores staff who processed and delivered many orders to individual, vulnerable households. This brilliant service has continued throughout the pandemic. The new home-delivery business models of some of our local farms also seem to have worked well and hopefully will survive. Several volunteers (notably, Geoff Ross) tirelessly collected and delivered regular medical prescriptions on behalf of a large number of patients throughout the parish. Geoff was ably assisted by Cllr Keeley Holland in Bigbury-on-Sea. Most of this work is now dormant as the COVID problem has subsided. However, should the need arise, I have no doubt that a similar group could be recruited very quickly to meet the needs of the community.
For the record, communication and coordination with the group and its ‘customers’ were conducted on behalf of the parish council by me with the help of Cllr Valerie Scott – largely by phone or email contact. External support was provided for specific problems by DCC (funding of some public traffic notices), SHDC and Coastguard staff (managing crowded car parks, beaches, etc.). Valerie and Karen Lawrence also constructed some excellent maps to help delivery drivers locate all the difficult-to–find properties within the unnamed roads of our parish.
Once again, thank you so much for volunteering. Your spirit is what holds our community together!
