Devon and Cornwall Police looking for snow heroes
The appalling conditions and heavy snowfall impacted massively on communities in Devon and Cornwall. Police and partner agencies worked tirelessly to safeguard lives and to minimise disruption and on many occasions, without having to be asked, local volunteers pitched in to help. We now want to thank the #SnowHeroes who went above and beyond to help the emergency services during these busy days. If you know of someone who gave their time to help, no matter how big or small their efforts, please nominate them on the Devon and Cornwall Police website www.dc.police.uk/snowheroes Chief Superintendent Glen Mayhew, commanding the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police operations department, said: “During the first few days of March, while our counties were gripped in the teeth of the Beast from the East and Storm Emma, local volunteers went above and beyond to help the police and other agencies. “Volunteers helped in many ways such as taking food to stranded motorists, freeing vehicles stuck in snow and visiting vulnerable people to check on their welfare. “Sometimes the people they helped were friends or family or neighbours, and at other times they were complete strangers. The community spirit we witnessed during those days was extraordinary. “Now we would like to recognise the contribution of these real snow heroes. Devon and Cornwall Police would like to hear about these volunteers and how they went above and beyond to help. Please nominate your snow hero before Sunday 25 March.” Nominees will receive a letter of recognition from Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police Shaun Sawyer. Those chosen for special commendation will be invited to a day “behind the blue line” at Police Headquarters in Exeter and meet members of operational policing teams such as the dog unit and the drone team. Closing date for nominations Sunday 25 March 2017 #SnowHeroes |

http://apps.southhams.gov.uk/PlanningSearchMVC/Home/Details/180470
A general discussion of the application is likely to be added to the relevant item on the PC Agenda for 14th February.
JAPANESE KNOTWEED INFORMATION
With reference to the Bay Cafe site, in particular, the following link provides a wealth of information about Japanese Knotweed and how to deal with this invasive plant. Extermination is a long-term project requiring determination and dedication!
PROPOSED DEMOLITION OF BAY VIEW CAFE & WARREN COTTAGE: OBJECT NOW, PLEASE!
The following link will take you to the South Hams Planning portal where Gallion Property Developers have just made an application to demolish Warren Cottage/Bay View Cafe after the 18 January.
Our District Councillor, Beth Huntley, is up a mountain in the Himalayas and cannot coordinate the response – she has asked for your help via Charterlands Chatter Facebook.
Its up to you to do what you can as quickly as possible. It takes up to 3 days for an Objection to be posted on the South Hams website once you have pressed the submit button and we only have until 18 January.
http://apps.southhams.gov.uk/PlanningSearchMVC/Home/Details/174383
1. Forward this note to anyone whom you think would want to stop this demolition and ask them to object to the permission to demolish.
2. Make an Objection yourself as quickly as possible.
The issues are many but these include
Planning Permission was refused by the SHDC for 4 luxury houses on this site. Gallion have not yet heard back from the Inspector who heard their Appeal against the refusal,
The buildings were designated a Community Asset of Value by the due legal planning process. The developers have also appealed against this CAV designation and the relevant tribunal will not be held until April/May 2018.
By applying to demolish what was clearly designated as a Community Asset by the local planning authority, the developers have shown an utter contempt for the local community and for the national planning process.
They should withdraw their application for demolition until AFTER the outcome of their APPEAL against Planning Permission is known.
The South Hams Council should not have accepted a planning Application for Demolition until AFTER the Appeal processes were completed.
This is a national issue and you are urged to write to the local newspapers and voice your concerns about this as a matter of principle.
Prestigious Award for Hope Cove Life Boat
The highest award for volunteers in the United Kingdom, has been given to the Hope Cove Life Boat. The charity was one of five volunteer groups from Devon to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, at a ceremony in Plymouth’s Council House on 9 October.
The Hope Cove Life Boat provides rescue cover for Bigbury Bay and complements Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) cover in the area. The Life Boat is run by volunteers as a registered charity with no funding from the government or any other organisation.
Graham Phillips, Chairman of Hope Cove Life Boat said: “It is both a privilege, and an honour to realise that Hope Cove Life Boat has been chosen as a recipient of the award. The Life Boat is grateful to the efforts of so many, not just within the small community of Hope Cove, but the wider community of The South Hams, Devon, the rest of The U.K., and even further afield.
“It would be impossible to single out any individuals or groups of individuals, however, I am going to make special mention of ‘The Crew’. Without the ceaseless efforts of the crew, the craft would not operate.”
Cllr Kathy Cuthbert, South Hams District Council’s Chairman said: “I was pleased to attend the ceremony and to witness Hope Cove Life Boat receiving such a prestigious award. We are very proud of the charity and we praise its achievement and outstanding work. Many people and the broader community have benefitted from years of Hope Cove Life Boat’s dedication. This award is definitely well-deserved.”
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups within the United Kingdom and is the equivalent to the MBE. This national honour was first announced in April 2002 to mark the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. The award is presented every year to a select group of winners.
Volunteer groups from regions across the UK must be nominated in order to be considered for the award. Their work or charity must be run locally and provide a service that meets the local community’s need. 22 volunteer groups from the South West were nominated and received the award for 2017.
