SHDC Shares Kingsbridge Quay Consultation Feedback
Earlier this year, South Hams District Council (SHDC) held a consultation to find out what residents thought about proposals to improve the Quay area of the town. Today SHDC share the results.
The Council promised they would share the full and honest results, showing residents’ opinions and they have kept their word. The consultation proposals offer 40 affordable housing, 50 residential apartments, along with highway and public realm improvements to the Market Square area.
The council would like to thank those who took the time to read the proposals and complete the survey. From the 719 survey responses received, three key themes were felt strongly:
- development on the Quay needs to be scaled appropriately, if at all;
- affordable housing needs to be truly affordable
- parking is important and any lost spaces need to be kept to the minimum;
The consultation was best engaged with by those over 45. Interestingly, there was more support for the proposals, from those aged under 45 than over it, as demonstrated by the response to Q8. Consultees were asked if they supported the principal of development on the Quayside in general. Half of the respondents under 45 supported the principle, whereas only 27% of those over showed support.
Leader of the Council, Cllr John Tucker, said: “The people of Kingsbridge have spoken clearly of their views about our proposals and we welcome their views. What is very clear to us, is that those younger residents trying to access the housing market are strongly in favour of the plans which support affordable housing. It is really important that we get the balance right between the Quay proposed development and the housing needs of the community.”
The full report, will be released following the Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday 19 October.
