As most people are aware Connecting Devon and Somerset cancelled the Gigaclear contract in September 2019 and are about to embark on a re-tendering exercise.
The Connecting Devon and Somerset website has more detail of the reasons for this decision and the status of the overall plan as they see it today..
Gigaclear have advised our Clerk today that a significant amount of installation work has been completed across Bigbury Parish, including the installation of cabinets. Gigaclear are keen to get some financial return for their efforts and investment and as such are currently preparing a plan as how they can connect people, should individuals choose Gigaclear as their provider of choice.
Gigaclear advise the detail of this plan should be available within the next 2-3 months and when complete, it is their intention to mail drop every resident with a copy setting out the status of the infrastructure project and options open to residents to connect.
A public consultation has been launched by Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) ahead of undertaking a fresh procurement to find contractors to provide superfast broadband.
CDS, which is responsible for rolling out publicly-funded broadband across the two counties, is establishing the remaining area where there are no current or credible future plans to deliver Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband infrastructure capable of download speeds of at least 30Mbps.
Nearly one million homes and businesses in Devon and Somerset now have access to superfast broadband thanks to the Government supported CDS programme and stimulation of the commercial market which is an important element of CDS’s role. Of these, over 300,000 homes and businesses have access to superfast broadband as a direct result of investment by CDS.
A link to the CDS news release is attached which provides more information and links to the consultation webpage.
N.B. DCC Cllr. Rufus Gilbert
(Cabinet Member, Economy & Skills) states ‘Where Gigaclear have installed infrastructure, we understand they are going to finish rolling out the service’.
Our Clerk has been advised to contact Gigaclear to clarify the situation for this parish
The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) broadband programme is now offering vouchers through the national BDUK Better Broadband Scheme.
All homes and businesses in the region with broadband speeds of less than two Megabits per second (Mbps), without a published delivery date for superfast broadband within the next 12 months, are now eligible to apply for an interim solution under the voucher scheme.
The Better Broadband Voucher Scheme, administered by BDUK, helps provide access to a broadband service offering download speeds of at least 10 Mbps. Vouchers worth up to £350 would contribute towards the cost of equipment and installation of a 4G, Fixed Wireless or Satellite solution.

CONNECTING DEVON & SOMERSET
Dear Parish Clerk,
Just a reminder that our Broadband User Survey closes on Sunday 9 December.
The survey aims to capture people’s broadband needs and compare whether these needs are being met by the service they receive. The survey is open to all residents and businesses within Devon and Somerset and in addition to capturing the impact from the new infrastructure, it will help us identify the broadband needs across our counties and the data will influence our future Digital Strategy.
Our Broadband User Survey asks questions about current available speeds, what homes or businesses can and cannot do with their existing broadband and the levels of satisfaction with their provider. The survey typically takes about five minutes to complete online and can be found at www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/broadband-user-survey.
We are keen for the survey to be completed by as many local residents and businesses as possible so please feel free to share the survey link to help promote it and bring it to the awareness of their local communities.
