PARISH COUNCIL – CASUAL VACANCY
A vacancy has arisen for the position of Parish Councillor for Bigbury. Please see the formal Notice:-
CASUAL VACANCY
Intending applicants should note the following:-
1) Applicants have to be eligible – i.e. be on the electoral register in the Parish or in very exceptional circumstances live close to (but outside) the Parish Boundary.
2) Applicants need to be aware of the requirement to attend meetings – and the consequence of not doing so.
This has been a factor in three of the last four changes.
3) Applications need to be submitted in writing to Clerk – clerk.bigburypc@gmail.com
4) Applications should include details of any prior experience and personal interests (preferably relevant to the community) BUT most importantly some statements about how they will add value to the Council and by default the Community.
The Clerk will schedule ‘interviews’ for potential candidates ahead of the February PC meeting.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – IMPORTANT (includes Proposal Maps 1-3 at high resolution)
The version of the NP that will be the subject of a parish referendum, early in the New Year, is now available for scrutiny in the DOCUMENTS section of the NP area on this website. The referendum will be the final stage of the passage of the NP through the planning system.
Three proposal maps associated with the Plan are included here at higher resolution than in the Referendum document. Click on the maps and enlarge at will.
Having been passed (and lavishly praised) by the external Inspector, the NP already carries considerable weight for planning purposes and, of course, was prepared on behalf of Bigbury Parish Council.

Community-led housing scheme at St Ann’s Chapel
The Parish Council and Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group are pleased to be able to report that the planning application for the community-led housing scheme proposed on land at Holwell Farm, St Ann’s Chapel was approved, subject to the completion of a Section 106 Agreement, by the South Hams District Council Development Management Committee on 22nd May 2019 (Application Ref: 4214/18/FUL). This was given unanimous support by Members of the Committee who considered that the proposed development was an excellent example of a development designed specifically to meet the local housing needs of a rural parish and comprised a scheme of a very high standard of design and sustainability.

Salcombe Harbour Master Talks Boat Safety
25/7/18
Salcombe Harbour Authority is advising those taking to the water this summer on how to stay safe on boats.
Following a serious, but rare, incident at the weekend involving youngsters on the water, and in a bid to encourage locals and visitors to keep safe while having fun in the harbour, the Harbour Master is sharing key boat safety information.
The campaign aims to remind boat users to wear a ‘kill cord’. This red cord has a quick-release fastening at one end and a clip at the other. The quick-release fastening is attached to the boat’s instrument panel and the other end is attached securely to the driver; making sure that the outboard engine cuts out if the driver falls overboard.
This is especially important to avoid another ‘Padstow’ type incident where a family suffered fatalities and life changing injuries when they were thrown from their boat and collided with it, while it was out of control in a high speed turn.
Salcombe Harbour Master, Cameron Sims-Stirling, said: “We want everyone to enjoy everything the harbour has to offer and to do that, we call on boat owners to take sensible precautions before taking to the water.”
If you are planning on driving small pleasure boats this summer, there are no set requirements for safety equipment, however, it is important that you are properly equipped before going on the water.
Have a safe day out by remembering to use:
life jackets which fit
kill cords
stay within the speed limit – 6 knots (kts) in the estuary
don’t mix alcohol and boating
All equipment should be checked regularly for damage to make sure it is fit for purpose. It is also important that lifejackets come in different sizes, so make sure you have one which fits you properly.
South Hams District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, Cllr Rufus Gilbert, said: “It is important that this safety message is heard far and wide by both our residents and our visitors. We hope that accidents can easily be avoided if these simple measures are followed.”
