Dear Landowner,
As you are aware Bigbury Parish Council is continually striving to enhance the Parish and encourage community spirit and working together. Towards this end we have for some time been considering the introduction of allotments into the area and we are very keen to progress with finding some land that would be suitable.
The Parish Council might well be in a position to buy a piece of land for this purpose if we can win suitable funding and we are writing to ask if you are willing to offer us an area that may be suitable. In particular we are looking for an accessible piece of agricultural land, around half an acre or so in size, that would provide us with a fertile growing facility to benefit the whole of the community.
As time is of the essence with regard to funding, we would be grateful if you could make contact with Councillor Trudy Boys on 01548 810185 or email trudyboys@talktalk.net as soon as possible if you have a piece of land and you are interested in helping us with this new and exciting project.
Many Bigbury homeowners will be using oil to heat their property, and this is widely known to be the most expensive way to heat your home. But many of us have no choice! Many families will struggle to heat their homes this year and fuel poverty is becoming a major issue in Devon.
The Devon Oil Collective is a community based, countywide bulk buying scheme. The scheme is run by the highly regarded Community Council of Devon (CCD) and supported by Devon County Council. Anybody is able to join at an annual cost of £24 which you will soon either recoup or, otherwise, get re-funded.
The main aim of the scheme is to reduce the costs of domestic heating oil for homeowners. CCD will do this by collating orders from across the county, negotiate directly with suppliers to find the best possible price and pass those savings onto the homeowners. With such a high number of households across Devon off the gas network, there is huge potential bulk buying power.
The more people we have ordering through the scheme, the greater our bulk buying power and the greater savings which can be made for them. Together we can tackle fuel poverty head on!
For further information, including historical cost savings, delivery arrangements, etc., see the CCD website – www.devonrcc.org.uk – or call 01392 248919

South Hams businesses on or near the coast can get low cost
advice thanks to a new project, supported by South Hams District Council.
Advice is being offered to existing businesses to help them grow and improve their profitability. During the one-to-one meetings, business “health checks” appraising relevant aspects of the business are carried out, including finance, marketing, customer relations and other areas of business management. The aim is to help businesses improve their competitiveness, attract more customers and safeguard jobs. The expert advice would normally cost around £500 but is available for just £20 – thanks to grant funding. The business health checks are provided by Business Information Point (BIP), a Devon based enterprise agency. The low cost advice is open to communities in the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group area. In the South Hams, the areas included are Allington, Loddiswell, Charterlands (i.e. Bigbury), Dartmouth, Kingswear, the Erme Valley, Kingsbridge, North Newton, Noss Mayo, Salcombe, Malborough, Saltstone, Skerries, Stokenham, Thurlestone, Wembury, Brixton, West Dart, Westville, Alvington and Yealmpton. Part of the parishes of Stoke Gabriel, Holbeton, Modbury, Dittisham, Cornworthy and Blackawton are also eligible. In addition, a free Enterprise Club is due to start in Ivybridge, supported by BIP, which is open to anyone thinking of starting up a new business. For more information contact BIP on 0800 592 872. |
Rose has produced a special August edition of Bigbury News for the community website to keep you up to date. Usually she takes a rest at this time of year!
Go to the Bigbury News GROUP, find the DOCUMENTS section and click on the relevant file.
A new FOOTPATH GROUP has been added to the website to encourage the use and enjoyment of the many lovely walks within this and neighbouring parishes.
A major feature of the GROUP is the inclusion in the DOCUMENTS section of the 7 walks described in the April 2009 edition of David Gay’s booklet ‘Take a Walk on the Wildside’, currently being revised. I am very grateful to David for making the relevant files available.
