Bigbury Parish Council unanimously rejected the planning application for a solar array of 200 panels on Burgh Island at a well-attended public council meeting last evening. A change in the landscape character of the Heritage Coast and a high visual impact on the surrounding environment within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty were cited as the most important ‘material considerations’ in reaching this decision. Such a semi-industrial scale development in the middle of an iconic tourist attraction of world renown was felt to be quite inappropriate. The National Planning Policy Framework states that such developments within an AONB should only be permitted in exceptional cases and then only for the benefit of the public. The parish council’s full response to the consultation may be read on SHDC’s website.
